French Kiss (fitting in)

French Kiss is a video tryptic that reinterprets the fairy tale The Princess and the Frog. In this work, the artist depicts the psychological impact of her move from Quebec to Ontario and how it made her consider her French Canadian identity. These stop-motion performances for the camera use the characters of the princess and the frog to represent some of the psychological dynamics experienced because of this displacement.

Maria Legault is a franco-ontarian performance artist living in Toronto. She has a PHD research creation and is interested in feminist art practices, identity art and performance art.

French Kiss (fitting in) focuses on assimilation. In this work the princess, used as a symbol for the dominant group, attempts to force the frog, used as a symbol of French-Canadian identity, to fit into a small aquarium. This becomes a metaphor for being forced in an inhospitable space.
